Born in Washington, DC and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, Shana earned two degrees from the illustrious Howard University: a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology. Shana then went on to obtain a Juris Doctorate from the University of the District of Columbia School of Law. During law school, Shana interned at Black Entertainment Television (BET) in the Legal Affairs department. After graduating, she began her career working as an associate entertainment attorney at the Law Offices of Lita Rosario Esq. Working with Lita afforded her the opportunity to be mentored by one of the sharpest female attorneys in the game. While there, Shana negotiated and drafted recording contracts, licensing deals and production deals for top music industry artists. Shana loves to entertain, travel the world to explore new cuisines, and bring all of her life experiences to her dining room table. She has mastered the art of putting love in food. Because of this, Shana is the designated chef and host of all her family and friends' gatherings. When she’s not entertaining, Shana currently works as a contract attorney on corporate litigation matters in Washington, DC, and serves on the board of Bridges Beyond 17 Giving Circle (BB17). BB17 specifically works to benefit young ladies of African-American descent in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and was founded by Eshauna Smith. Shana worships at Kingdom Fellowship AME Church where she is a member of the Praise and Worship Team. She currently resides in Maryland with her husband of sixteen years and their two children.
In her new book, UppityBrunch: Create a Five-Star Brunch at Home, you’ll find a deeply personal testimony of her journey beginning with her heartbreaking cancer diagnosis while a twenty-year-old student at Howard University. Shana courageously reveals how she navigated her way out of the subsequent depression and anxiety that followed and the recipes she created along the way. In UppityBrunch, Shana shares how, she went from merely surviving to thriving by; staying in the word of God, getting therapy, practicing self-care, receiving unwavering support and dedication from her loving husband, and consistently preparing and gathering for meals with her loved ones for encouragement.
Please see an excerpt from her inspirational cookbook below for insight as to where and how her passion for food started, and how her appreciation for intimate gatherings for meals began.
